Although I never made it on to Masterchef Canada, while I was waiting to hear back from them, I wanted to practice some of the basics of cooking, and that means sauces! Fortunately living with chefs meant there were all sorts of great cookbooks hanging around. As part of expanding my knowledge of the basics, I dug into one of my room-mate, Nathan’s cookbooks – “Sauces” by Michel Roux, which this recipe is derived from.

This dessert makes me happy because, well it’s dessert, and dessert is delicious! But on the other hand, it makes me sad, because Celeste, one of my old room-mates made it, and now she is on a cross country road trip to Newfoundland with her fiancée (and my other room-mate) Ross, which means they no longer live in Saskatoon with me! Sadness On the positive side, she is blogging their whole adventure on Sugar Cured, if you love food, travel, and cursing, definitely check it out!
Over this summer, a good friend and I have been going out for evening trail rides every Friday. These are such a treat, nothing beats the relaxation of good friends, beautiful scenery of the Saskatchewan prairies and a horse. Before we head out, we eat dinner with her adorable little family. I recently made these for one of our rides and they were a hit! Easy, and tiny enough to fit perfectly in your hand (and just small enough for not feeling guilty if you have a second helping ) I’d imagine you could play around with the type of apples or the filling itself. All in all, these are a wonderful fall treat and would make a beautiful addition to any dessert table.

As many of you know I’m an avid bowhunter and now that September is here, hunting is in full swing. One of my favorite parts about hunting is being able to spend time with my “second” family, the Kuiack’s. After coming in for a visit, Heather (my other mom) sent me home with TONS of pickles from her garden and this fabulous recipe for sweet pickles that came from a neighbor of theirs. These pickles still have a slight crunch, a perfect sweet and vinegar-tart taste and would be great served with crackers and cheese or on your favourite sandwich.. Barbecue + Chicken + Fresh Herbs = Magic. I’ve never been much of a mathematician, but that is one equation I can wrap my head around! Fall is coming waaay to quick in Saskatoon and I’m not happy about it! While I love Fall and the beautiful colours it brings, sadly, it means barbecue season is almost over, and that, my friends, is a time of great sadness. In the spirit of summer, I encourage you to go forth, spatchcock a chicken (yes that’s right), rub it with delicious chimichurri, and barbecue that thing whole! At least that’s what I did here.

It’s a blend of fresh herbs, red wine vinegar, and olive oil, and it’s absolutely delicious! Just like Saskatoon berries, raspberries are in full force at our family acreage. Raspberries are great for freezing, eating fresh or making jams, but I was interested in making something more with them, so when I saw this recipe on Pinterest I knew I had to give it a try! A friend also tried this recipe but switched up some of the dark chocolate with milk chocolate and it tasted amazing, so I kept that change when I made the bars for one of our Sunday family dinners. Where we come from, a tasty little berry lives in the plenty: The Saskatoon Berry. These berries are sweet, slightly tart and nutty in flavor. Our parents have quite a few Saskatoon berry bushes in their fruit orchard, so come late July and early August, it’s Saskatoon berry galore.
I made this pie for a redneck day (shooting guns and bows, quadding through mud, exploring old farm yards, campfires and scouting moose, elk, owls and deer) at my Uncle Waz and Auntie Rita’s farm. People always talk up pies and I think it’s because they have the expectation that they are hard to make. As many of you may have already read from Bob’s Beer Can Chicken post, we were recently back on CTV Morning Live with our good friend and fabulous anchor (and apparently my twin – as I was stopped at a local coffee shop later that afternoon asking if I co-hosted the morning news!), Stephanie Massicotte. Bob covered the savoury dish with his chicken, so I was back tackling the sweets with these ice cream tacos. These tacos are so fun and simple, so don’t hold back the reins. Carlene and I have finally made our re-appearance together on CTV, whipping up barbecue recipes for August long! Steph from CTV made a special request for Beer Can Chicken, and left us up to decide what else we wanted to do, so Carlene settled on Ice Cream Tacos! It’s actually a bit absurd that this is the first time doing Beer Can Chicken on the blog, as it’s something our family has been doing for years and years, even before the whole Beer Can Chicken craze took place!
I know, I know, this isn’t technically “Beer Can” chicken, since I used Snapple, but the concept is the same! In fact, beer really isn’t necessary to make “Beer Can Chicken”, using other soda’s, or water infused with herbs, or tea, can add a nice subtle flavour to your chicken, so feel free to experiment!
