Homemade Dog Fortune Cookies

April 28th, 2012 · No Comments · Cookies, Just for Fun, Pets

Well it’s pretty clear that by the nature of this recipe that I: a) need to get a life b) need to find better things to fill my time with c) have gone crazy d) all of the above…..Whatever the proper answer is, I was on a roll with making dog treats (stay tuned for more recipes) for all the lovely canine buds in my life and thought “dog fortune cookies might be kinda funny and something unique.” So that’s where it started people. Let’s get to the recipe & the doggie fortunes.

Ingredients for 4-6 fortune cookies:

  • 1 egg white
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/4 cup very loosely packed brown sugar
  • a teeny tiny tiny pinch of salt and cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp water
Preheat your oven to 400ºF and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper & grease the paper. In a bowl, whisk your egg whites by hand for about one minute, until they become nice and frothy. Add in your remaining ingredients and whisk for 30 seconds or until smoothly combined.
Scoop one tablespoon of the batter onto the cookie sheet and spread thinly into a 4″ diameter circle. Do one more circle of batter. Do not do more than two batter circles – because you will need to move FAST to fold the cookies into shape.
Pop into the oven for 6-7 minutes, until the edges get nice and crisp. Now this is where you need to plan in advance, set aside a muffin tin (where the cookies will rest after shaped to cool) and put on mini mitts, yes – mini mitts, which will help to protect your hands from the extremely hot cookie.
Once the cookies are done, you literally have 10 seconds per cookie to fold before they start to harden. You’ll first start by placing the fortune in the middle, folding the cookie circle in half, then fold the other way around your finger to create a fortune cookie shape. After the cookie has been shaped, set in the muffin tin to cool. This might seem a bit confusing so here is a video from someone on YouTube that gives a good visual (around the 2 minute mark, ignore the human ingredients):

Continue until you do not have any remaining batter left.

These cookies take a bit of time, but are really fun and cute! Now, are you wondering what I used as my doggie fortunes? Take a peak for yourself – just don’t tell anyone your fortune, because that’s bad luck 😉 :

  • Anything worth chewing is worth chewing well….
  • There is no such thing as a stranger…only a butt that hasn’t been sniffed!
  • Sled dogs go the extra mile…
  • It’s better to be housebroken than heartbroken…
  • Be cautious of what tree you bark up…
  • The dog who pees on the other dog, has a leg up on the competition!
  • Something you’ve buried will turn up soon…
  • Life is like a leash – longer the better!
  • Life is just one table scrap after another
  • If you are a host to a person, be a host to their dog too….

Now you are probably asking…”Carlene, you don’t have any dogs in your house – who got these cookies”…well this is who!

Happy Fortunes,

Carlene
