This week we received a lot of fabulous vegetable recipes as part of the Julia Child JC100 Celebration. Let’s kick things off with a simple recipe that makes a great side dish to any dinner: Asparagus Au Naturel topped with a creamy Hollandaise Sauce.

Well let me start this post off with explaining why this recipe is a bit late…. Saskatchewan was slammed with a heat and humidity wave all of last week and the last place I wanted to be was inside, let alone my kitchen (my house was 27°C in the evening…. I don’t even want to know what the humidity levels were inside) and to start boiling a hot pot of soup….Nope – no thanks! Originally, I was hoping to do some walleye fishing and use some local fish, but then got rained out on that plan. Because of the rain, I headed to the grocery store to buy some seafood and was happy that I found some mussels. To continue the adventure, when I got home I opened the package and was hit with the nasty smell of seafood gone bad – wowza, talk about an awful smell. Note to others: if the mussels are even SLIGHTLY open, they have spoiled! So much for mussels in the soup. I was a bit sad too because I knew their beautiful shells would add an extra dimension to the plating. But in good news, the heat cooled off thanks to buckets of rain and I was able to make the soup. So now that it’s here, let’s get to this recipe… Continue reading

It’s hard to believe we are already on week eight of the Julia Child celebration. This week’s French cooking assignment was a roasted chicken. Like Bob & I’s other posts, we wanted to jazz things up a bit so we did a lemon dill roasted chicken. Is it possible to ever go wrong with lemon and dill?! This chicken was moist, full of flavour and easy to make! Let’s get to the recipe so you can start cooking it too! Continue reading

Time is flying by with the Julia Child 100 year celebration and it’s already onto week 4! This time with the fancy and filling Salad Nicoise [nee-SWAHZ]. With each assignment Carlene and I receive, we try to stay true to the recipe, but add a little extra flare if possible! This week is no exception. Instead of piling a bunch of ingredients into a bowl, we wanted to use some great fresh tuna and a different plating style to class things up a bit!

It is now week 3 of the 100 year celebration of Julia Child and they’ve hit us with a doozy! Well not really, but this one did certainly take more time than the Omelette Roulee of week 1 which was in and out of my HOT pan in a minute and a half! (That’s my kind of recipe). This week I was faced with Coq au Vin, which is essentially “Chicken in Wine”. I knew this would be more challenging for me, not because it was difficult to prepare, but because I don’t like following recipes, but I stuck it through and it was a success!

Last week, Carlene and I got an email asking whether we would be interested in celebrating Julia Child’s 100th birthday by joining many other foodies in cooking a Julia Child recipe each week! Always interested in trying new recipes, especially those from a culinary icon like Julia Child, we opted in! Every Monday over the next 100 days leading up to Julia Child’s birthday, we will be receiving a a recipe and the option to cook and blog it. Check out the Facebook page (and several other social media channels) to learn more about this awesome celebration and discover what recipes they post every Thursday.
