Sole Meuniere | JC 100 – Week 7

This week the folks representing Julia Child finally decided to bring out the infallible Sole Meuniere, the recipe that changed it all for Julia! Now I can’t attest to having an “AHA” moment like Julia Child upon first bite, but I must say this was some pretty tasty fish! I will be honest, I was ready to be underwhelmed just based off the fact that this recipe has so much hype surrounding it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself enjoying what became a very simple and delicious meal! The Sole had a wonderful browned, crisp and buttery exterior, with a soft, flaky interior, which, topped with some lemon juice, was excellent.

I present REINE DE SABA i.e. my very FIRST time baking for the blog!

Going into the Julia Child 100 year celebration, I knew I wanted to be involved as a way to improve my cooking skills and repertoire. What I didn’t know, is that I would be improving my baking skills too! Naturally, the first week we receive a baking assignment, Carlene is out of town, leaving it in MY HANDS! Not one to back down from a challenge, I committed myself to this recipe and ended up with a successfully baked cake!

I’ve been on a big pulse kick lately and trying to find unique and creative ways to add these super foods into my diet. Also, I feel very guilty for living in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan which produces 99% of Canada’s lentil and chickpea crops and 67%  of Canada’s dry pea crop, yet I don’t really know how to re-hyrdrate them, cook or bake with them. So this is a continuation of my adventures! These little lentil bars taste freaking awesome and are packed full of goodness making them great for a grab-n-go breakfast, fuel/recovery snack for athletes or just a healthy, gluten-free snack. Caramelized Carrot & Dill Soup

Okay, I think everyone gets the point now that I’m basically addicted to soup… and if you really know me, you know I’ve been addicted to carrots my whole life! I even turned orange as a kid from the carotene in carrots… don’t believe me? Ask my mom. Maybe that’s why name is Carlene – close to Carotene…har har har 😉 So natural – to me – this soup is just fabulous!

I made this delicious and crunchy Almond-Hazelnut Buttercrunch Toffee as part of my Christmas baking. As a per warning, do NOT store this brittle in a cold place like a garage where Dad’s are known to hang out, as you’ll go to decoratively wrap it and notice that a large piece of the brittle is missing…. yet “no one” has been snacking on it….
