I’m gonna go right ahead and say that I have the best room-mates ever! Nathan is an executive chef, Ross is a cook, and Celeste is a pastry Chef. Needless to say, some pretty awesome culinary happenings have a tendency of going down here!

Thanks to Celeste’s sourdough starter she calls “Fester”, we have a steady supply of fresh sourdough bread being baked up every few days. Last night as Celeste made a couple loaves, she did some experimentation with one of them, and added sesame seeds. Not only did it turn out delicious, but it inspired me to create an “Asian Steak Sandwich”, which was not only beautiful, but delicious!

Asian Brined Pork with Vermicelli Noodle Salad

Asian Brined Pork with Vermicelli Noodle Salad | bsinthekitchen.com #bsinthekitchen #asian #pork

Barbecue season is upon us, warm weather is here, and summer is on its way! Thanks to a very busy several months being stuck in my basement, editing a TV show, I am now experiencing uncontrollable cravings for warm weather and vitamin D! Fortunately, the weekly deadlines are done, and my schedule is a little more flexible, so I can finally enjoy this wonderful weather!

Homemade Ginger Beer

Homemade Ginger Beer | bsinthekitchen.com #gingerbeer #ginger #bsinthekitchen

Ginger beer is something I’ve been wanting to try making for years, and even though I knew it was relatively simple, I just never got around to doing it! My day finally came two weeks ago when I had yet another Ethnic Potluck with the team from Ayden Kitchen & Bar (you may remember the last Ethnic Potluck via my Banh Mi). This time I was in charge for making a dish from Jamaica!

Chili Cheese Grilled Cheese

Chili Cheese Grilled Cheese | bsinthekitchen.com #sandwich #grilledcheese #bsinthekitchen

What needs to be said about this one? They have chili cheese fries, chili cheese dogs, chili cheese nachos, so the next logical step (at least for me) is a Chili Cheese Grilled Cheese! Plenty of hearty chili, loads of cheese, sandwiched between two buttery slices of bread.

Chicken Pot Pie Grilled Cheese

Chicken Pot Pie Grilled Cheese | bsinthekitchen.com #grilledcheese #sandwich #bsinthekitchen

Well folks, my intentions were good, I really wanted to focus on posting more regularly, and then I failed!! I have been doing a fair amount of cooking and taking pictures for the blog, but I just haven’t taken the time to actually blog the recipes! This all changes right now, because it’s that time of the year again! NATIONAL GRILLED CHEESE MONTH! Perhaps you remember the epic celebration we had on the blog last year, doing a new grilled cheese recipe every day. If not, last years video will certainly jog your memory!

BS’ in the Kitchen Presents – National Grilled Cheese Month from Bob Deutscher on Vimeo.

I hate to break it to you guys, but this year I’m not going to be doing quite an epic celebration of grilled cheese. Fortunately, I have a few recipes that I have been saving for this month, so I’m excited to share them with you all finally! Let’s start it off!

Braised Wild Boar

IMG_2086-1Well it’s sad to say, but Bob and I haven’t blogged in over a month (and largely Bob’s been steering the blog ship with more recent posts – thanks Bob). But we’ve both been busy just soaking up life, getting our hands dirty with our careers and our photography/videography businesses, but last weekend we did have a enough time to get in a sibling wild boar hunt. Yup, you heard correctly, a wild boar hunt. Bob was behind the camera recording an episode for Maximus Outdoor TV and I was behind my new archery bow. The hunt was successful with a large boar (click HERE if you want to see a photo) and when you put in work into providing your own meat, along with the guidance from our outfitter Wild Boar Adventures, you really want to make sure you follow up with a delicious tasting meal. So let’s get to it, because this recipe is exactly that! Continue reading

Winter Squash Fettuccine

Winter Squash Fettuccine | bsinthekitchen.com #dinner #pasta #bsinthekitchen

I could say I feel bad about how many squash recipes I have posted over the last several months, but that would be a lie. I don’t feel bad. Squash is delicious! With that proclamation, I give you another recipe with squash in it. Once again, the February issue of Bon Appetit is pulling through big time, this is now the third delicious recipe I have made from it! Perhaps I should become a recipe tester for them?

Anyways, back to the recipe. After looking through the magazine, this one caught my eye, so I made a mental note to try it out. When I ended up with leftover butternut squash puree in my fridge a few days later, I knew this would be the perfect opportunity to use it!

Winter Squash Salad

Winter Squash Salad | bsinthekitchen.com #salad #squash #bsinthekitchen

Typically in winter I crave warm, hearty comfort foods like many others, but for whatever reason, this time I was really craving a salad. Given how cold and snowy it was outside, I figured, why not make this a comforting “winter” salad! With “wintery” ingredients already on hand, like kale and acorn squash, I knew I could whip something tasty up, so away I went.

Banh Mi Sandwich

Banh Mi Sandwich | bsinthekitchen.com #sandwich #vietnamese #bsinthekitchen

I was little frightened when my room-mate Nathan told me I was going to be in charge of cooking something for “Ethnic Potluck 2014″, a potluck with all the kitchen staff from Ayden Kitchen & Bar. Naturally it’s a little intimidating cooking with chefs of that level, and knowing I had to make a dish from another country didn’t help! Fortunately I got Vietnam, which I felt was one of the less intimidating submissions amongst places such as Peru, Croatia, Morocco, & more. After doing some research, given my love of sandwiches, I knew the Banh Mi was the way to go!

With my research and a little consultation from Nathan, I was ready to prepare my feast of Banh Mi! The end result was delicious! Although I have never actually had a Banh Mi, I think I did pretty darn good, and everyone else seemed quite satisfied with my contribution.

Fennel Crusted Pork Chop

Fennel Crusted Pork Chop | bsinthekitchen.com #pork #dinner #bsinthekitchen

This months issue of Bon Appetit is really appealing to my taste-buds! I’ve done the Chicken & Dumplings, the Peanut Butter-Sriracha Toast (which I tried out of pure curiosity and it was actually delicious), and now this pork chop. Not to mention a number of other recipes that have piqued my interest. In my efforts to reduce the amount of meat I keep in my freezer, I will be on a steady diet of pork chops and chicken until it’s all gone!

Last night after thawing out a pork chop, I realized I had some fennel in the fridge, along with a butternut squash puree that I thought would all go perfectly together. Recalling the Fennel Crusted Pork Chop recipe from Bon Appetit, I gave it a go with a few alterations!
