I first saw fried pickles awhile back and thought, what a strange, but interesting combination that was. Since then and more recently my eyes have come across more fried pickles and figured what the heck, they would be easy to make and I have all the ingredients so let’s try ’em! After texting Carlene and telling her about the next blog recipe I was going to make, it became clear we share the same brainwaves. She responds “I just bought all the ingredients to make those!”, well sister, looks like I beat you to the punch! BUT maybe we will get lucky and she will do a bit of a twist and share her recipe too!
Anyways.
Let’s get to this recipe. It was strange but tasty (as evidenced by the empty bowl I found myself with afterwards…).
Fried Pickles
- 1/2 cup Panko Bread Crumbs
- 1/8 cup Flour
- Salt & Pepper
- 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 Egg
- 3 Medium Sized Pickles
- Canola Oil
There isn’t too much to this recipe, aside from the slightly time consuming breading process, but it’s worth it for a tasty snack! First up, slice all of your pickles into even slices, then get three bowls, one with flour, one with the panko mixture and another for your egg. For the panko mixture, add the ½ tsp of garlic powder, a pinch of salt (though you can skip this, since pickles are already quite salty) and pepper to taste. Once your stations are set up, toss the pickle slices in a bowl of flour, making sure each slice is coated. Next, dip each slice in the whisked egg and finally into the panko, making sure you have a nice coating of bread crumbs on each slice.
Once all your slices are breaded, get a frying pan on medium heat, with enough canola oil to lightly coat the bottom. Once you’ve let it heat up for a minute or two, place all your pickles in the pan, frying each side until golden brown. Once they are done, place them on some paper towel to remove some oil and allow them to cool a bit, then dig in!
If you are the kind of person that enjoys dipping sauces, I would recommend using Ranch dressing, which is easy and very tasty!
These things were like real life dill pickle chips! They were crunchy and the sourness of the pickle was complimented nicely by the panko crumbs. I would definitely make these again, though I will warn those with strange pickle cravings. You may want to stay away from these, as you may get addicted!
Enjoy!
