One of my favourite things about the holidays is having people over and all of the leftover appetizers you get. My all time favourite is the leftover cheese trays, you get some nice Gouda, Havarti, Brie and other cheeses which are delicious for sandwiches and snacks for days after! After celebrating my mother’s 30+20 birthday (she wasn’t fooling anyone, we all know how to add) we had some delicious smoked Gouda and prosciutto left over, which I knew would be making it’s way into a sandwich of mine very soon!
After hiding the Gouda and prosciutto in the back of the fridge so my dad wouldn’t eat it the night before, I woke up feeling safe that my delicious sandwich-to-be was still faithfully waiting. Egg sandwiches with delicious toppings has got to be one of the best breakfasts ever; so simple and sooo delicious. So onto the preparation!
Prosciutto & Smoked Gouda Egg Sandwich
- 1 Egg
- 2 Slices of smoked Gouda
- 1 Slice prosciutto
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- Bread or bun
After taking all of the ingredients out of my fridge, I began heating my frying pan on medium-high, then I sliced a bun, the Gouda and got my prosciutto ready. Once your frying pan is nice and hot, place a knob of butter in it, allowing it to melt and spread over the pan, then crack your egg into the pan, salt and pepper to taste and cover with a lid. I like frying the egg on a higher heat, so the majority of the egg is still soft and fluffy, but the bottom gets nice and crispy. Once your egg is nearing completion place your cheese on it while it is in the frying pan so it gets nice and gooey (just thinking about it is making me hungry again!). Toast your bread or bun, butter it and place the egg on it. Quickly fry the prosciutto for about 30 seconds, so it starts to get waves in it and then use it to top off the sandwich.
Now all you need to do is sit at your favourite window with a coffee, newspaper, an appetite and enjoy!
Pretty. Good. Food.
Ok, I’m hungry now. Looks delicious 🙂
This sounds delicious! Fried egg sandwiches are one of my favorite breakfast items & I love prosciutto but never have any one hand.
Anytime! I find smoked Gouda can sometimes be overpowering, and something like Prosciutto… bring out the sweetness in it… the onion cheddar has a sweetness like french onion soup… bring out the meat, and sweetness of the egg…
That sounds like a great swap, anything with caramelized onions is A-OK in my books!
NICE! Now THAT’S how an egg mcmuffin should be! Though, I might swap the smoked gouda for a caramelized onion cheddar.
Mmm… looks like a delicious breakfast sandwich!
And I totally agree with you on the leftover cheese tray. Someone left a massive chunk of smoked gouda after thanksgiving and I turned it into smoked gouda mac and cheese. It was the best come uppin ever!
Wow, that looks awesome! I really feel like having breakfast right now, even though I just had dinner! :-))
