While I’m an avid fan of pork chops, I can still fall victim to the common problem of overcooking them! Fortunately this is where brining comes into play. Having never actually brined something, I was looking forward to the results and decided to go with a fairly simple brine.

Review and Give Away – Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child
Review – Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child
From interminably hungry young girl and “terror at the stove” to a “master” in the art of French cooking (but still interminably hungry!), “Dearie” chronicles the aptly titled “Remarkable Life of Julia Child” from high spirited child, to aimless social butterfly, and into the icon she has become. Bob Spitz provides an exhaustive look into the life of Julia Child, detailing her personal struggles and successes with family, work, love and ultimately finding her purpose….
Pumpkin Pasta (with Halloween Farfalle Pasta)
With fall upon us, out come the sweaters, colorful leaves, and MASSIVE amounts of Autumn inspired food appearing in the blogosphere! Not wanting to leave our blog out of all the action, I present to you Halloween Pumpkin Pasta! As I was actually shopping for some new fall clothes (think thick plaid button-up shirts, and comfy sweaters) when I came across this awesome looking pasta. With our other ventures into striped pasta garnering an impressive number of hits, I knew this had to be blogged! Of course, I wanted to make something in the spirit of the season, so instead of a typical pasta sauce, I gave a pumpkin based sauce a go!

Red Lentil Carrot Soup with Whole Wheat Cheddar Dill Biscuits
If you’ve been ready the blog for the past little while, you’ll know that I’m on a bit of a lentil kick. These little guys are packed with flavour, fibre, protein and vitamins, so what’s not to love! This easy fall soup is just an extension of my love. Two loves actually because it comes from the Kraft ‘What’s Cooking’ Recipe Flyer (I always find great recipe in those!), I slightly altered the recipe, but nothing huge. But let’s get to the recipe!…
Baked Apple-Pumpkin Oatmeal Breakfast Pie (Gluten Free)
I’ve been looking for a solid breakfast oatmeal pie recipe for a while ever since trying it at our local farmer’s market. After stumbling across this recipe on Pinterest, I knew I had to give it a whirl. I changed it quite a bit, using the Pinterest recipe more so as a platform to create a fall inspired breakfast pie. Now let’s get to the recipe!…
Apple Butter and Whole Wheat Biscuits
It’s hard to believe fall is really here. I might take some heat for saying this, but fall is my favourite season for numerous reasons – warm weather, crisp mornings and nights, beautiful fall colors, my favourite fashion season (hello boots!) and warm and inviting spices like cinnamon, nutmeg and clove all seem to make an appearance during fall. This recipe for Apple Butter and Whole Wheat Biscuits is a great way to welcome in fall and use up some of your apple harvest. So let’s get to this easy recipe!…
Pumpkin Spice Cookies with a Salted Caramel Frosting
It’s hard to believe summer is over and a crisp, warm fall is upon us. With that said, as sad as I am to see the days getting shorter and the air cooling off, I’m happy because it’s given me a bit of incentive to get back into the kitchen. Because it’s fall, it’s time to start playing with all the traditional spices that come with fall – cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, nutmeg, rich vanilla…. the list could go on and on. When I stumbled upon this recipe last night, I knew I had to make them: Pumpkin Spice Cookies with a Salted Caramel Frosting. These little guys are awesome, almost like a hybrid between a soft and chewy gingerbread cookie and a pumpkin pie. Let’s get to the recipe so you can give them a try yourself….
Cold Brewed Coffee Concentrate
While this post may be a little untimely as summer has reached its end, there is never a bad time for anything coffee related, at least not for me! I actually made this in June, but haven’t gotten around to posting it because it’s another VIDEO POST! Of course I shot it, started editing it, made the music, and when it was almost finished, got busy with other things and didn’t wrap things up until now! But alas, here it is, the delicious cold brewed coffee for your reading/viewing pleasure.
Prior to making this, I kept seeing and hearing things about Cold Brewed Coffee and how great it was, then it showed up in the July 2012 issue of Bon Appetit (which I subscribe to) and being the coffee addict I am I had to try it! As stated in the name, what sets this coffee apart is the fact that it’s “cold brewed”. Instead of running through your regular coffee making method (pouring some steaming hot water over your beans for a brew), you let it sit at room temperature in cold water for around 15 hours! Now that’s a long time when you’re fiending for a cup of joe, but that’s why you make it ahead of time, resulting in an even quicker way to get your fix when you really need it.

Dill Pickle Grilled Cheese
It seems like its been an eternity since I last posted a grilled cheese recipe, and with JC100 behind us, I’m finally getting back to regular blogging (a.k.a. MORE GRILLED CHEESE!). As mentioned in a previous post, I spent some time at my girlfriend Megan’s family cabin in BC, relaxing and eating lots during the September long weekend. Naturally, conversation drifted towards grilled cheese at some point during our stay, and Megan’s younger cousin Kasane mentioned she always puts pickles in her grilled cheese sandwiches!
PICKLES!?!
Why had I not done this before?? I’ve enjoyed pickles and cheese on several occasions, but never thought to put them in a grilled cheese! This all changed very quickly, as I later made one for Megan, and we both agreed it was a wonderful combination! So here it is folks:

Fresh Homemade Cherry Pie
A while ago, Bob & I were contacted by Taste of Home to review their “Cooking School Cookbook” and immediately we said yes. Taste of Home is one of the premier cookbook companies so how could we say no?! One of the recipes that first caught my eye was the Cherry Pie recipe – I’ve never cooked a pie from scratch before and each summer we have pounds upon pounds of fresh tart cherries. With my schedule finally freeing up and having a free evening, I dove into the kitchen to make this pie. Let’s get to the recipe!…
